XLPE/PVC insulated cables are available in two main types based on the level of mechanical protection required: armored and unarmored.
Unarmored XLPE/PVC Cables
- Structure:
- Conductor (Copper or Aluminum)
- XLPE Insulation
- PVC Sheath
- Characteristics:
- Flexible and lightweight
- Suitable for indoor installations, cable trays, or conduits
- No mechanical protection against impact or rodent damage
- Lower cost than armored versions
- Easier to bend and terminate

Armored XLPE/PVC Cables
- Structure:
- Conductor
- XLPE Insulation
- Armoring layer:
- 1. SWA (Steel Wire Armour) for multi-core cables (mechanical protection)
- 2. AWA (Aluminum Wire Armour) for single-core cables (non-magnetic to prevent eddy currents)
- PVC Sheath
- Characteristics:
- Provides mechanical protection from impact, crushing, and rodents
- Suitable for direct burial, underground, or external installations
- Less flexible than unarmored cables
- Higher cost due to added materials and weight
- Applications:
- Industrial power distribution
- Underground or exposed installations
- Areas with potential for mechanical damage
